REVIEW: SULWE by Lupita Nyong’o

“𝒟𝒶𝓎 𝑒𝓂𝒶𝓃𝒶𝓉𝑒𝒹 𝒶 𝑔𝑜𝓁𝒹𝑒𝓃 𝑔𝓁𝑜𝓌, 𝓌𝒽𝒾𝓁𝑒 𝒩𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 𝓈𝒽𝑜𝓃𝑒 𝒶 𝓈𝒾𝓁𝓋𝑒𝓇, 𝑒𝓁𝑒𝑔𝒶𝓃𝓉 𝓈𝒽𝑒𝑒𝓃 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓇𝑒𝒻𝒾𝓃𝑒𝒹 𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝒶𝓁𝓁 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔𝓈”

Sulwe has the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone in her family, even darker than all the other children in her school. Sulwe, the sweet little Sulwe, just want to be beautiful like her sister, who is the color of noon. Like her mother, the color of dawn or like her father, the color of twilight. She just want to belong more to her own family.

Sulwe – in all her ingenuity -, tries in every way to lighten her skin. After all, she just wants to be beautiful and shine like a star. After all her attempts fail, she says a prayer to God. A simple, desiring, humble prayer before bed. That when she woke up, her skin could be lighter.

Sulwe wakes up the same way, but a shooting star visits her during the night and Sulwe discovers at her magical journey that everything she thought she didn’t had was inside of her. Sulwe’s little journey opens her eyes and she learns a valuable lesson that will change her life.

“𝒮𝒽𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹𝓃’𝓉 𝒽𝒾𝒹𝑒 𝒶𝓃𝓎𝓂𝑜𝓇𝑒. 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝓌𝑜𝓇𝓁𝒹 𝓌𝒶𝓈 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓅𝓁𝒶𝒸𝑒! 𝒟𝒶𝓇𝓀 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒷𝑒𝒶𝓊𝓉𝒾𝒻𝓊𝓁, 𝓈𝓉𝓇𝑜𝓃𝑔 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒷𝓇𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉 ”

Sulwe’s 48-page short story was written by actress and writer Lupita Nyong’o. Based on her own experiences since childhood. The struggle she fought inside her for years, thinking that beauty didn’t belong to her. Lupita affectionately expresses through Sulwe the true sense of being beautiful. From shining the inner light and externalizing it to the world.

After all … ”Some lights can only be seen in the dark”
